Whanau Connections

Whanau reconnection in Te Ao Maori is mainly through our urban Marae that were purpose built to allow for tangihana, hui and a place of learning through the NUMA total of 26 Marae, notably the five main Matua Marae - Hoani Waititi in West Auckland, Tangaroa in South Auckland, Te Kohao o Te Ngira in Hamilton, Te Whare Marie in Wellington, and Te Aoraki in Christchurch. The uniqueness with urban Marae is that a pan tribal sharing of customs and practices are observed for all iwi and New Zealanders. To elaborate, connectivity is via kapa haka, Marae justice for youth offenders, growth of kohanga, kura kaupapa whare wananga, and whare karakia.

NUMA’s ability to demonstrate cultural responsiveness and cultural competence is reflected in the service delivery and the nature of the relationships with people that are served in their respective communities. The makeup of the current staffing of NUMA member organisations reflects their acknowledgement of cultural diversity of the community.

The wider communities e.g. Pacific Island are welcomed given that many of our mokopuna share mixed heritage - naturally extending our networks across cultures. By our unique positioning and the symbiotic nature of our approach we respect and embrace all other communities and are proactive initiating and sustaining relationships - evident in the high participation rate at our Marae events and festivities.

NUMA Roopu Kaumatua provides an integral link to Te Ao Maori as younger generations of city dwellers were not immersed in Te Ao Maori and their repository of knowledge is sought regularly.
